Round 6 of the Super League was played out this week on Tuesday & Wednesday evenings.
Tuesday night saw Monarchs take on Mystics where Monarchs’ pairings of Roger Griffin & Mike Jones and Roger Green & Mike Wigg faced Ros Goddard & Derek Dyer and Ian & Beryl McCarthy of the Mystics.
Ros and Derek did not get going against Roger and Mike, who won comfortably 13-1. Messrs Green and Wigg were 12-4 up but Ian and Beryl had other ideas, pointing in for 4 to make it 12-8. Two more points from the McCarthys made it 12-10 and an upset was on the cards, until Roger and Mike got 3 points to close the game.
In the second round Ros and Derek were outplayed by Roger and Wiggy, losing 3-13. Ian and Beryl took a 3-point lead over Roger and Mike and were looking dangerous, with Beryl pointing well as usual. However, the Monarchs pulled it back and finally won 13-6 to secure a 4-0 result.
Once again the Mystics displayed a fighting spirit that does them credit and will bring them success the more they play together.
On Wednesday evening Minotaurs faced Marauders and, as has become the norm for this fixture, it poured down. At least it wasn’t persistent rain but a series of very heavy showers!
In the first games Minotaurs Bernard & Jayne faced Phil & John Chich whilst Peter K and Barney took on Marauders Gill Clark & Amanda. Bernard & Jayne took an early lead but were pegged back by Phil & Chich who went on to win 13-8. Minotaurs Peter K & Barney fared better against Gill & Amanda taking a comfortable 13-4 win. So all square at the break and all to play for.
The second half got underway with Marauders Phil & Chich taking a commanding 11-6 lead over Minotaurs. Peter K & Barney refused to lie down and chipped away at the lead and found themselves leading 12-11. With Minotaurs holding and game on the floor Phil played the shot of night by shooting Minotaurs’ boule with a spot carreau to give Marauders 2 points for a 13-12 win. What a finish! On the other piste Minotaurs Bernard & Jayne were looking set for a crushing win but Gill and Amanda staged a comeback. Minotaurs then re-found a bit of form and ran out 13-9 winners. So another Minotaurs v Marauders norm was continued – a draw – but as usual a closely fought enjoyable match.
