2024 Club Doubles

Good turnout today for the Club Doubles competition. 40 members, including for the first time 4 members of our Junior Section (Maddie Bartlett, Kitty Johnson, Lina & Teilo Muenier)  competed under leaden skies but least the rain held off.

The format was the usually 3 round melee where partners were drawn from to seeded pots to try to balance the teams in experience. Games were untimed.

After Round 1 the leaders were Sean Smith/Paul Hawkins (+9) followed by Vickie Adshead/ Linda Thomas (+7) and John Maroney/Lloyd Kinsey (+6). Maddie Bartlett with her partner (& uncle) Gareth Bartlett was the only Junior winner (+2).

When the scores came in it looked as though Sean/ Paul had an unassailable lead on 2 wins (+20). Their nearest challengers were Robin Ralph/ Leon Sofianos (+11) with Peter Kensett/Tony Cooper, Mike Jones/Andrew Siso and John Maroney/Lloyd Kinsey all on (+9).

So it was on to the final round. Mike/Andres (+10) & Peter/Tony (+18) had both won but their points difference was not enough to overtake Sean/Paul – all they needed was a win, however small, to take the overall trophy. There was also a pair of new kids on the block, Maddie/Gareth who had recorded their  3rd win 13-1 for (+17) – to avoid their blushes I won’t name the team they beat (but if you study the results carefully its there for all to see!)

News came in from the final game on the pistes between Sean/Paul and Roger Griffin/John Edwards that the score was tight but eventually Roger/John triumphed and ended Sean/Paul’s hope of winning the competition.

The presentations followed and Maddie took the Best Junior award while Peter/Tony took the overall winner trophy.

Junior Section Up & Bouling

It’s been talked about for months and yesterday it finally arrived – Monkstone Petanque Club held its first Junior Section coaching session!! 11 young people attended the session – 6 club members and 5 other friends of, or children/grandchildren of, club members.

Introductions being over it was down to the serious business. Tony Smith, the Club Coach, ably assisted by Ash Seath, Roger Green and Melys Phinnemore. put the participants through a number of coaching exercises focusing mainly on pointing but with some shooting as well as the basic concepts of how to throw a boule etc etc.

The participants seemed to enjoy activities such as trying to throw a boule into a tyre, trying as a team to knock boules out of a ring before the other team or trying to knock out a row of boules before the other team – all of them designed to teach skills as well as being fun.

The session continued after a break for squash & biscuits and ended with two  games of triples between the participants.

A big thank-you to Tony, Ash, Roger & Melys and for their hard work and to the other club members who turned up to help or to lend support and we look forward to the next session which is planned to be within the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Monkstone Petanque Club wishes to thank Sports Wales and Magic Little Grants (People’s Postcode Lottery) for their continued support which has enabled the club to start this new exciting venture.

A Little Bit More Magic

Monkstone PC is pleased to announce that we received a Magic Little Grant through the partnership between Localgiving and Postcode Community Trust. Postcode Community Trust is a grant-giving charity funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Localgiving is the UK’s leading membership and support network for local charities and community groups. Our project received £500, plus £50 Match Funding, to help us buy more equipment for non members to play, and to invite local groups and schools to play petanque. With the interest generated from young people we intend to start a junior section of the club in 2024.
