2019 Nations Veterans Cup Round-up

They think it’s all over ……………. well, the 2019 Nations Veterans Cup is now! After months of planning and preparation by the Monkstone Club, the weekend went by in a flash. Those who were there witnessed some excellent boules played for the most part under glorious Cardiff sunshine.

On Friday evening, the teams gathered in the Penylan Club for opening meal and the welcome speeches from Bob Pugh on behalf of the WPA and Mike Jones for the Monkstone Club.

The competition commenced with the traditional photoshoot before play got underway under the watchful eye of umpire Mike Pegg from England.

Three rounds were played on the first morning before the teams went in for an excellent lunch with Denmark 2 taking an early lead on 8 points followed by Scotland 2 on 7 points and Denmark 1, Jersey 1, Norway 1 and Wales 2 all on 6. Denmark were the clear leaders in the competition with 14 points followed by Norway on 9 and Wales 8.

So it was on to the afternoon with another four rounds to be played. As the thermometer rose so did the standard of play although there was a brief respite when it clouded over and the temperature dropped before it cleared again.

At the end of the first day’s play and with seven rounds played Norway 1 had taken a slight lead on 15 points with both Denmark 1 & 2 on 14 points. In the overall competition Denmark had taken an almost unassailable lead with 28 points followed by Norway on 20 and Holland on 18.

Teams then retired to the bar and then for another excellent dinner prepared and served by 5 very hard working members of the Monkstone club.

After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast the teams were ready for the final three rounds on Sunday morning. The weather again was very warm and demands for bottles of water continued at the same high rate as the previous day.

The big question was whether Norway or Holland could put together a late run to catch Denmark. When the results for Round 8 came in, Denmark had gained a further 5 points by beating Norway in both matches putting them on 33 points – with Holland only taking 3 points it meant that Denmark could not be caught. Whilst Denmark 2 had taken a 1 point lead over Denmark 1, the Best Team award could still go to either of the Denmark teams, Norway 1 or Holland 1.

So we came to lunch time and with Round 10 complete all that remained was to calculate the final scores. In the race for Best Team Denmark 1 came out on top with 24 points closely followed by Denmark 2 on 23 points and Norway 1 on 19 points. In the overall competition Denmark were declared 2019 Nations Veterans Cup winners with 47 points with second place going to Holland on 34 points.

The Final tables for the individual teams and for the nations

Almost, it seemed, as soon as it had started the 2019 Nations Veterans Cup was over with all the teams saying what a great time they had had in Cardiff and thanking the Monkstone Club for the work that had gone into the organisation of the competition and the excellent catering over the weekend.

And so it is on to ………..? for the 2020 edition of the competition.

NVC – Results after Day 1

After a great days play in glorious sunny Cardiff weather, Denmark find themselves in a strong position for the Nations title and will be very difficult to catch!

The Individual Team title is much closer with Denmark 1 & 2, Holland 1 and Norway 1 are neck and neck with with Jersey 1 still in with a great chance.

As for Wales ……… best we can say is that they have a lot to do!!!!

Nations Veterans Cup

NATIONS VETERANS CUP 2019

After months of planning, a lot of hard work with not a little worry and chewed nails, the Nations Veterans Cup is coming to the Club on 28 & 29 June 2019.

Little did the four Monkstone players (Roger Griffin, Tony Smith, Bernard & Vickie Adshead) who represented Wales in last year’s competition in Denmark suspect that the following year we would be hosting the event in Wales. A series of conversations with Henrik Toft of the Danish Federation led to an invitation to the WPA to stage the 2019 edition. Monkstone PC agreed to underwrite the event and on that basis the WPA accepted the invitation.

The competition was inaugurated by the Danish Federation a few years ago and has been held there every year up to 2018. It was conceived as an invitational, friendly, veterans (+55 ) competition for the smaller federations and associations. This year we welcome teams representing Holland, Jersey, Norway, Scotland, Denmark and of course Wales.

The Club is immensely proud to be hosting what is believed to be the first international competition of its kind to be held in Wales. Let’s hope that the weather is kind to us and that we have a friendly but hard fought competition.

Colin Ballett Doubles

The day commenced with Tim Howard of Penarth PC thanking the Monkstone club for the use of their facilities for the Colin Ballett Doubles as Penarth no longer have use of the Kymin, the usual venue, and Monkstone had offered them use of our club.

Sixteen teams entered including four teams and two half teams from Monkstone – Sean & Phil, Peter K and Keith N, Vickie & Jayne, Roger Grif & Bernard plus Mike J playing with Tim and Tony S playing with Jean-Yves.

After the morning session with four pools of 4, Vickie & Jayne, Sean & Phil and Tony & J-Y got through to the Main whilst the remaining Monkstone players were in the Plate. These games were on a knockout basis.

In the first round of the Main, Vickie & Jayne made a remarkable comeback against Alan ? & John ?. Trailing 1-10, they started to pick up points and eventually ran out 13-10 winners.  Sean & Phil came unstuck in the first round whilst Tony & J-Y came through unscathed. Vickie & Jayne came up against Kon & Peter Westall in the semi-final and were overwhelmed, losing 3-13. Tony & J-Y came through against Len & Jeremy to set up a Final against Kon & Peter. The Final was a nail biting affair with the lead constantly changing and never more than 2 points in it. Tony & J-Y were leading 10-9 when they finally succumbed and conceded 4 points in the final end.

In the Plate all the Monkstone players got through the first round setting up semi-finals with Keith & Pete playing Mike & Tim whilst Roger & Bernard were up against Barbara & Richard from Caerleon.  Keith and Pete came through 13-9 and then sat watching to see who would be their opponents in the Final. Roger & Bernard played a very tense game against Barbara & Richard where both teams had a chance to close out the game but the spoils eventually went to Roger & Bernard by 13-12.

So it was on to an all-Monkstone Final in which Keith & Pete took an early lead but were pegged back and it was very close until, with the score at 10-10, Roger and Bernard managed to sneak 3 points to run out winners of the Plate.

The presentations were made to the winners & runners up by Simone Ballett, the widow of the  ex-Penarth player after whom the competition is named.

Monkstone Open Doubles

Fourteen teams entered today’s Monkstone Open Doubles and after a chilly start the weather and the competition warmed up. With 14 teams it was difficult to have the usual pools followed by knockout and so a computer generated random draw was carried out where each team would play 6 other teams. By lunchtime, after 3 rounds, there were 4 teams on 3 wins:

Keith Nott & John Barnes Richard Harris & Matt Howells
Kon Tomczyk & Peter Westall Roger Griffin & Bernard Adshead

The afternoon session got underway and Round 4 brought Nott & Barnes against Griffin & Adshead. Unfortunately John Barnes was suffering with a shoulder injury and Griffin & Adshead ran out comfortable winners. With the other two lunchtime leaders also winning it put 3 teams on 4 wins. All 3 teams notched up a win in Round 5 to set up an exciting finish in Round 6.

Going into the final round all 3 teams were very close on games for/against but the order was:

1 Richard Harris & Matt Howells
2 Roger Griffin & Bernard Adshead
3 Kon Tomczyk & Peter Westall

The round pitted Tomczyk & Westall against Griffin & Adshead which meant only 2 teams could finish with 6 wins and with Harris & Howells drawn against Len Field & Jeremy Clare (3 wins) they were clear favourites to win the competition. The game between Tomczyk & Westall and Griffin & Adshead was nip and tuck with each team grabbing the lead only to lose it again. Unknown to both teams Harris & Howells had succumbed to Clare & Field meaning the winners of this game would win the competition being the only team with 6 wins. In a nail biting finish Tomczyk & Westall just managed to triumph by 9-8.

The final results were announced by Club President, Mike Jones:

Pos Team W F A
1 Kon Tomczyk & Peter Westall 6 73 35
2 Richard Harris & Matt Howells 5 73 25
3 Roger Griffin & Bernard Adshead 5 73 35

Congratulations to Kon Tomczyk & Peter Westall and a big thank you to all those who entered and took part. A special thank-you to Tony Smith for acting as organiser and running the competition.
